A podcast (or netcast) is a digital medium consisting of an episodic series of audio, video, PDF, or ePub files subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer or mobile device.
The easiest way to describe a podcast to someone who has never heard of one before would be by comparing it to a radio show, only instead of being live it is pre-recorded. Now that’s not to say that you cannot produce and record your podcast live but one of the main points of a podcast is that people can download it and listen or view it at a later date. Even many radio stations will now release certain shows as podcasts so that people can catch up on them after they are live.
There are a number of reasons to create a podcast, just take a look in the iTunes store, everyone from the BBC to regular Joe is creating a podcast now. A podcast can be about anything, do you have a hobby that you think other people would be interested in? Are you a business owner? Podcasting may not have the same reach as some other platforms but the people who decide to listen to you chose you specifically, if you have a podcast about XYZ category then they specifically decided to listen to your podcast because they are also interested in XYZ category, this can be extremely valuable for businesses.
How much does podcasting cost?
The podcast itself costs nothing at all, all of the associated costs are with the creation (equipment etc). Saying that however, whilst the quality would not be the best if you have a laptop (or desktop, tablet, phone etc) with a mic then you already have all the equipment you need to get started right away.
What is PodcastAssist?
PodcastAssist is a website that is designed to help you get up and running with your own podcast (although most of this knowledge and resources are not just limited to podcasting, much of it can be carried over to all forms on content creation and media production). PodcastAssist is setup by Jamie and Aaron from MunchTech.tv, we have been podcasting since January of 2010 and since then have created well over 400 episodes of various podcasts. Our main one ‘The Two Techies‘ which is our weekly technology news show has over 220+ episodes and is listened to by a global audience.
